We can give you tips on how to choose mattress size, so whether you’re a single sleeper, you’re looking for a bed for your kid, or you share your bed with your partner, you’ll know exactly what to look for when it comes to the perfect mattress.

Before you can start exploring bed sizes, you’ll have to decide which type of mattress you like the most.

There are three main types:

  • memory foam mattress
  • innerspring mattress
  • hybrid mattress

Memory Foam Mattresses

They contour to the specific shape of your body for a personalized experience. Plus, by molding to your body’s shape as you adjust your body throughout the night, memory foam reduces your pressure points, so you don’t wake up in pain. If you’re planning to share this type of mattress with your partner, you also won’t be disturbed by their tossing and turning because there’s less motion transfer. While memory foam mattresses aren’t naturally as cool as innerspring mattresses, the latest technologies work hard to keep heat away from your body and improve airflow and breathability to keep you cool every night.

Innerspring Mattresses

If you like the traditional feel of a mattress that’s bouncy and supports you with coil springs, then an innerspring mattress is for you. And what’s great about the latest technologies is that each coil is wrapped individually to provide your body with strong support where you need it the most as well as preventing the coils from popping out of the mattress. Innerspring mattresses are also extremely breathable to keep you cool throughout the night.

Hybrid Mattresses

Hybrid mattresses offer the best of both worlds as they’re made with both foam and springs. So if you can’t decide between a memory foam mattress or an innerspring mattress, go for a hybrid! You’ll get the bouncy support and natural cooling you love from the coils while the memory foam focuses on contouring to your body to give you the pressure relief you’ve been looking for, helping you wake up pain-free.

What do sleeping positions mean?

A sleeping position is how your body is positioned while you sleep, whether it’s sleeping on your back, your side, or your stomach. This is the next step for you before you can even consider which mattress size you want.

Back Sleepers

Sleeping on your back naturally puts more pressure on your back, but when you have the right comfort level mattress, you’re getting the proper amount of support and won’t wake up in pain. A firm or medium-firm mattress helps to lift and set your spine in a neutral alignment. This helps alleviate any tension you have in your back and any pain you experience with arthritis and fibromyalgia. Your neck and spine will always have the support you need, so you can sleep throughout the night without waking up sore and uncomfortable.

Side Sleepers

If you sleep on your side, you need cushioning for your shoulders and hips because these areas are where you’re putting the most pressure on your body. This means you’ll want to stick to a plush mattress that contours to the curves of your body so you don’t wake up feeling sore. Sleeping on your side also naturally helps with acid reflux, heartburn, and sleep apnea. So go ahead, side sleeper, sink into a plush mattress so you’re comfortable every single night!

Stomach Sleepers

Last but not least, we have our stomach sleepers! Sleeping on your stomach is great for diminishing sleep apnea and reducing snoring, but you’re also putting more strain on your joints, especially your back and neck. You’re going to want a mattress that cushions your body. With that thought, we think a soft mattress is the best solution!

Now that we have gone over the types of mattresses and sleeping positions, you can move on to picking out the size mattress that’s best for your needs!

Twin XL and Twin Mattresses

If you’re a child or teen and don’t have a lot of room, a twin xl or twin sized mattress is a perfect size. It’s long enough for you to sleep on and it saves room in a small space.

Full Mattresses

When you’re an adult single sleeper and want a bigger bed, go ahead and get a full size mattress. It gives you space to stretch out without feeling overcrowded. A full bed is also a great option for guest rooms, maximizing space and allowing one or two of your friends to sleep over.

Queen and King Mattresses

If you’re sharing your bed with your partner, a queen mattress is a great size, so you both have room to lie down comfortably. Taller people will fit best on a king sized mattress. It’s as long as a queen size mattress but also five inches wider, perfect for sharing a bed with your partner and your dogs too.
