7 Common Bedroom Mistakes

When it comes to your bedroom, there are design mistakes that you might be making without even realizing it. Keep in mind that we spend one-third of our lives sleeping, so improving your bedroom’s design can be beneficial. So, join us below as we go over seven common bedroom mistakes!

  1. Your bed is too big– In a studio apartment or small space, anything past a full bed or queen bed might be too much. In a master bedroom, even choosing a queen bed over a king bed makes a difference, giving you space to add case goods such as a dresser or chest of drawers without cramming the room. In a blog post from Apartment Therapy, it is explained how having a big bed is not a good thing: “A bed that’s too big will leave you with a lack of walking room and storage space. Plus, a huge headboard/bed frame can make your bedroom seem cramped even when it’s not.” You want to make the most out of your bedroom, so by having an open space, you can still add other pieces that express your style without taking over the room’s dimensions.

2. Your wall color is too loud– When you think of your bedroom, you want it to be a retreat where you unwind at night before going to sleep and start your morning with a fresh start. If your bedroom wall color is something bright such as red or yellow, you are not accomplishing relaxation. The color becomes distracting and too much energy for a room that is meant to be the opposite. Consider a calming tone such as a soft gray or blue. For example, the image of the bedroom above is what you don’t want.

3. Your nightstand is too tall or short– Whether you’re using a side table, nightstand, or even a wooden chair as your bedside table, there’s nothing more inconvenient than having to reach up or lean down for your smartphone, book, or water when a nightstand is meant for your convenience. Apartment Therapy mentions an ideal height: “the right height, both functionally and aesthetically, is at about the same level as the top of your mattress.” The image below is an example of how you don’t want your nightstands to look.

4. Your bed is in the wrong place– This could be a few different things. Maybe your bed is in front of the main window of your bedroom, so it’s already blocking your natural light. You might also have your bed positioned in a way that makes the room smaller than it is, especially if it’s hard to walk around your bed when you are getting in or out of it. Simply moving your bed around can make all the difference.

5. You don’t have enough storage– We get it, minimalism is definitely a trend that is not going away but when it comes to your bedroom, sacrificing storage space for a clean look is not a good thing. Cramming all your clothing on hangers in your closet just ends up being too cluttered. If you just think a dresser is too bulky for your room, you can add it inside your closet if it’s big enough so everything is put away and neatly organized. A chest of drawers is also a narrow and tall piece that can you place in your bedroom away from your bed so it’s still minimal. Here’s a solution for you. Consider the Alma Bedroom Set below with plenty of storage available.

6. All your bedroom furniture matches– While a bedroom set can be a practical choice, with a bed, dresser, nightstand, and mirror typically included, it ends up leaving the bedroom without a sense of your style personality. A blog post from Self Storage explains this mistake: “Having a room full of perfectly matched furniture can look boring and outdated. A room will always look more interesting if you can mix and match different pieces together.” This doesn’t mean none of your bedroom furniture should match. For example, if you just have a matching bed and nightstand, you can add an eye-catching piece such as a dresser with a pop of color or a unique design to show off your bedroom’s style. See how the pieces in the bedroom below come together to create a unified design with different materials and construction included.

7. You don’t have enough lighting– When you are not ready for bed and are just spending time in your bedroom, of course, overhead lighting is needed. But if you don’t have a lamp beside you as you’re unwinding with a book before you sleep, having just one lighting option is limiting: “Make sure your bedroom has multiple lighting options; a mix of both task lighting and adjustable ambient lighting is the winning combination.” You’ll want to add a sconce or table lamp that you can easily adjust with dimmable settings. This second lighting option isn’t as harsh and can help you relax before bed. Also, adding one of these pieces allows you to turn it off without having to get up from your bed.
